چکیده

This work shows that 5 out of 6 acoustic parameters that correctly classify read and narrated speech in Brazilian Portuguese are temporal parameters. Several statistical models showed that significant differences between the styles are revealed by: speech rate, a measure of articulation rate, duration-related salience rate, mean and standard-deviation of degree of duration-related salience and mean of F0 first derivative. A set of 161 excerpts of narrated and read speech from ten speakers was used for training an LDA model. Another set of 57 excerpts with different subjects was used for testing the same model. Its performance with the six aforementioned parameters has achieved in the case of read speech an accuracy rate of 90 % for the training subset and 94 % for the test subset and in the case of narrated speech 70 % for the training subset and 27 % for the test subset.

Music and speech in early development: automatic analysis and classification of prosodic features from two Portuguese variants

In the present study, we aim to capture rhythmic and melodic patterning in speech and singing directed to infants. We address this issue by exploring the acoustic features that best predict different classification problems. We built a database composed by infant-directed speech from two Portuguese variants (European vs Brazilian Portuguese) and infant-directed singing from the two cultures, co...

‘Minor’ Languages, ‘Broken’ Translations: On Brazilian Reworkings of an Albanian Novel

This essay approaches the challenges of global translation in the 21st century from what might still be considered a somewhat uncommon example: a direct translation of Ismail Kadaré's 1978 novel Prill e thyër (Broken April) from the original Albanian into Brazilian Portuguese in 2001. Not only does it examine and compare lexical elements in the source and target texts and the usage of translato...

Cross-variety rhythm typology in portuguese

This paper aims at proposing a measure of speech rhythm based on the inference of the coupling strength between the syllable oscillator and the stress group oscillator of an underlying coupled oscillators model. This coupling is inferred from the linear regression between the stress group duration and the number of syllables within the group, as well as from the multiple linear regression betwe...
